Raccoon Rescue

Everyone at Gulf Islands National Seashore works together to protect our wildlife and resources. Jena, in the Maintenance, called us early this afternoon to let us know they had found this raccoon (Procyon lotor) with his head stuck in a 5 gallon bucket!

The poor little guy was terrified. Andy Fernandez, Jena and Mark worked together to free him from his plastic prison. Our new SCA, Michelle, helped as well. Even Law Enforcement Ranger Larry Bova stopped by the check on the critter.

The scared juvenile raccoon is free now, though he's moved from the Ranger Station at Fort Pickens to Naval Live Oaks. Hope he'll do well!

International Coastal Clean-Up!

The 2008 Coastal Clean-Up on Santa Rosa Island was a great success, but we can work together to make everyday a Coastal Clean-up Day... Help us keep our beaches beautiful!
